Akua N. Ishangi believes that culture and tradition give us identity and direction. Anthropology is the vehicle she uses to examine lifestyles and beliefs that produce maxims such as the Adinkra proverb Sankofa: "It is alright to go back and fetch something that was once yours but lost,” (a powerful assumption when applied to the American Indian, indigenous Australian, African-American legacy, or any people who were denied knowledge of their culture and traditions) and determine it’s origin, validity and/or relevancy in this world of constant change.
Her field study in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, the Gambia and other west African countries, in conjunction with over 30 years experience of presenting African dance, music, history and folklore to audiences in the United States and abroad, culminates as curator of three major African art exhibitions: “Africa’s Living Arts: the Ishangi Journey,” presented in 2004, “Africa’s Living Arts: the Spirit of the Masquerade,” presented in 2007 and "Africa's Living Arts: Textiles - Silent Oratory" exhibited at the Ritz Theater & La Villa Museum in Jacksonville, Florida, February 8, 2009 - September 30, 2009.
